You may be saying to yourself that instead of sharing with you how your forum could be a disaster, why can’t I just focus on how you can succeed, right? Well, It’s important to know the right methods to make good money online, but if you’re using forums, you have to know how to do it right. You have to use the right methods on how you could make the members be more active or else you would totally be defeating the purpose of the forum.
The reason why I am sharing this with you is because I have seen other internet marketers becoming so obsessed with the right methods of promoting and advertising that they barely take time to learn about the things they should not do. So, in the process of trying to accomplish all the right things, they are left unaware that they are already doing the wrong things.
In the unending learning process in the internet marketing, specifically in creating forums, you also have to be aware of the things you should not do, so you can always be on guard.
Here are the ten mistakes that I often observe with other internet marketers which hinders their forum’s success. Learn from it so it would not happen to you. I just want to emphasize that doing these things could not only impede the success of your forum but it can also kill your forum in just a short time.
1. Focusing on the look and not the functionality
I know how we, internet marketers can become so fixated with the design and the aesthetics of the forum site. Personally, I also enjoy taking time to make the site look good. Then again, be careful not to be consumed by this such that all your time is already devoted to making it visually pleasing. The aspect which you should be paying more attention to is the content of your forum site and how good it is when it comes to catering the wants of the members and other people who search through the internet. These people are seeking for answers to their queries. They are looking for a venue in the internet which could help them out with their concerns. People may endure a forum site that is not big in the aesthetic aspect but they will not tolerate one which does not have quality content. Imagine a book with a great cover but does not have a substantial content. Would you go on reading it?
2. Not having the initiative to post
It is important to encourage a lot of people to sign in your forum. Fact is, sometimes even if you do have a lot of members, not all of them are going to actively start posting on your forum. Other members will only browse through new topics or search for discussions related to their concerns but they will not really start a new thread or post something new. Others would even go online but would still remain quiet. Some internet marketers tend to just wait for the members to keep the forum alive. They expect the members to do all the posts so that other people will go on with various threads. If you want to keep the discussion going amongst the members, you have to have the initiative to post for new topics that will trigger the interest of the members. Go for those which actively seek for their participation. Be the one to come up with new topics for discussion and fresh posts so that they will be encouraged to be more participative.
3. Anticipating an immediate boom in the discussion
Keep your expectations real and achievable so you will also not get disheartened. Things in the internet marketing world does not happen like magic, nor will it happen to your forum. If your forum is not yet as active as how you want it on the first couple of months, give it some time and do not just give up on the idea. Keep on improving your forum and have much patience.
4. Deadlines which are impossible to accomplish
When you promise your members a particular thing, like for example a new information on a particular product or improvement on a particular aspect of the site, make sure that the deadline you will set is also something that is doable. If you are scared to extend the timeline because you think that your members might get impatient, just think of how disappointed they would be if you are not able to deliver your promise on the date which you personally set. So, be a more realistic when it comes to announcing particular dates. This will work better in making your members trust you more.
5. Get to know your competition
If you want to encourage more people to become interested with your forum, be aware too of what other forums provide for them. This way, you can strategize your steps on how you could grab the attention of other people and make them want t sign up for your forum. It is great to be focused on your forum but do not just confine yourself within it. Know what others are doing so you will know what to do and what not to do. This may even make you avoid the mistakes that some of them did so you would not have to suffer the consequences.
6. Keep it unique and original
I have seen a lot of internet marketers who depend on the ideas of other people. When they see how much success the other one is making, they will do exactly the same thing—same format, same approach, same almost everything. Do not do this. Come up with creative ways of doing things and this will even make you much more successful. When people see something fresh and new with your forum, they would have a reason to get into it. If they are seeing the same thing which they have already seen with other forums, why else would they need to sign up for yours?
7. Trying to be overly impressive
Logically, as an internet marketer, you would want to showcase your knowledge and make people aware of how much you are acquainted with the facts and details. This is a good thing because it will help you establish a good credibility and you will win the trust and confidence of your members. Just do not overdo it by putting in too many categories and subcategories and all the other links which the web visitor needs to click just to access the information that they need. Make your site user friendly and hassle free to navigate. This way, your members and other visitors will not feel overwhelmed buy too many things that are going on within your site.
8. Depending too much on your staff members
It is okay to seek help from other people especially when you feel that you got your hands full. This way, you will be able to accomplish the things you need to get done. On the other hand, do not be too dependent on them. Get involved too and not just expect everything to be accomplished by your staff. Remember to choose well also when it comes to the people whom you want to work with in your business. It is great if you could find someone who will share the same interest that you have with the business.
9. Unreliable information and content
Now this can seriously ruin things for you. I feel that I do not need to elaborate much on this since this is pretty much understandable that unreliable information can really ruin your forum.
10. Lack of time to devote for the forum
Some internet marketers just want the money which they will earn but does not want to dedicate time for their business. If you want progress and success make sure that you have sufficient time to devote for it.
